2091 is a medium strength aluminum alloy with 8% lower density and 7% higher modulus of elasticity than 2024-T3. 2219 aluminum alloy series was developed to improve the high temperature performance of 2000 series aluminum alloys, which has low thermal cracking tendency and good welding performance. 2091 aluminum alloy has slightly higher thermoplasticity than 2219 aluminum alloy and higher sensitivity to thermal cracking, which is the disadvantage of 2091 aluminum alloy. disadvantage.
The ductility of 2091 steel recovers slowly during cooling and does not fully recover after heating to zero strength temperature. 2091 aluminum alloy has little difference in axial and lateral thermal ductility. The zero ductility temperature is 540 °C, and the temperature changes from grain-piercing fracture to epitaxial fracture.
The reason for the loss of ductility of 2091 aluminum alloy is the aggregation of T2 phase at grain boundaries, leading to unbalanced eutectic melting and resulting in grain boundary liquefaction. During cooling, the T2 phase does not recover completely, leaving voids. The high temperature thermal cracking susceptibility of 2091-T3 is better measured by using NST as the peak temperature of thermal cycling.
The 2091 aluminum alloy is a damage tolerant alloy with a density 8% lower than 2024-T3 and a modulus 1% higher than 2024-T3. 2024-T3 is a major high toughness damage tolerant alloy used in most aircraft structures today. 2091 aluminum alloy is also suitable for secondary structures where high strength is not critical.
