2219 aluminum alloy has higher bullet aging capability and no stress corrosion cracking susceptibility than conventional 5000 steel wire, which inhibits Al-Zn-Mg in weapons and combat vehicles. 2519 alloy can replace 5000 steel wire as an alternative armor material with good weldability for use in armor materials and other commercial applications such as combat vehicles and aircraft.
Alloy 2519 is a highly solderable modification of 2219 aluminum alloy that has a reduced copper content and a small amount of magnesium added. Typically, the copper content is reduced and the alloy has a slightly increased susceptibility to thermal cracking. While the addition of magnesium contributes to strength, the susceptibility to thermal cracking during welding increases.
The key to promoting the application of the alloy is the development of reasonable production scale and good sheet quality, as well as semi-finished products with excellent overall properties, especially the hot rolling process. 2519 alloy's heat deformation not only has a higher activation energy (167-81 kJ/mO1) than pure aluminum (142 kJ/mO1) for self-activation, but is also much higher than most industrial aluminum alloys due to the presence of copper, magnesium and other alloying elements.
