Copper-nickel alloys (also known as cupro-nickel alloys) offer the most acceptable high-strength option for copper alloys. This is because the addition of nickel to a pure copper matrix increases the strength and corrosion resistance of copper, while retaining its ductility when subjected to heat and pressure - making it an excellent material choice for piping systems.
However, strength is not the only characteristic of these alloys. Copper-nickel alloys also offer a great option for those who want to pursue water resistance. For example, if you want to generate electricity underwater or anything related to commercial shipping, copper-nickel is the ideal material.
Interestingly, despite the presence of copper, copper-nickel has a uniform silver color due to the high electronegativity of the nickel component. In addition, copper-nickel retains the favorable non-scaling and non-fouling properties of copper, but has a yield strength several times greater than copper.
